Narrative:
“On a Christmas Day we were mushing our way over the Dawson Trail.
Talk of your cold! Through the parka’s fold it stabbed like a driven nail.
If our eyes we’d close, then the lashes froze, till sometimes we couldn’t see.
It wasn’t much fun, but the only one to whimper was Sam McGee.”
-Robert W. Service
from “The Cremation of Sam McGee”It was from those famous old lines that the mixed-breed dog of this present day team got its name. Even though he does whimper at times, Sam the sled dog is no wimp. Built for pulling loads with enduring speed, he has a heart that loves to run. Like the Sam McGee of old, overheating is not something he worries about, either.
Sure, the temperature may be low, but Sam’s spirit is high, and his team won’t let the trail grow cold. Fortified by hot food, a big fire, and visions of a pampered rest in Dawson, he keeps pushing on…earning his place in the ranks of the tough, competent dogs and people who have mushed this trail for centuries.
